Voices that Matter Web Design 2008 Workshop::Adobe© AIR® for Designers
Voices That Matter is a relatively new series of conferences put on by the publisher Pearson Education (who owns Peachpit Press, for whom I do most of my book writing). Their first Web Design conference was held in the Fall 2007 and was very well received. Their second Web Design conference is being held in Nashville, Tennessee (US) from Wednesday, June 11th, to Friday, June 13th, 2008. On Tuesday, June 10th, there are four pre-conference workshops, one of which is "Adobe AIR for Developers", with yours truly as the presenter. It runs from 9:00AM until 12:30PM. You can view a description of the workshop at http://voicesthatmatter.com/webdesign2008/workshops.aspx#adobeair. Information about the conference as a whole is available at the Web site. You can register for the entire conference, for just one or two workshops, or for the conference plus one or two workshops. If you use the code WDDSPKR (case-sensitive), you'll receive a $200 (US) discount. I don't do many engagements like this anymore (since my kids were born), so I'm excited about this rare opportunity to get out and interact with others and to show people how they can be using Adobe AIR. If you have any questions about this workshop, let me know.
I highly recommend that attendees download the following before the conference, if you have not already (all are free):
- Adobe AIR runtime (get.adobe.com/air)
- Adobe AIR SDK (www.adobe.com/products/air/tools/sdk)
- Java Runtime Environment (java.sun.com)
If you are using either Adobe Dreamweaver or Aptana Studio, you should configure them for Adobe AIR application development. For details, see the corresponding Help files, search the Web, or email me. If you're not already using Dreamweaver, I would recommend grabbing Aptana Studio: it's free and runs on most platforms.
Thanks for your interest in this presentation!

A beta version of the presentation I'll be giving is available for viewing in the following formats. A word of warning: I'm creating the presentation using Keynote and unfortunately it exports things rather largely, so I apologize for the large file sizes. Hopefully, the high-quality presentation I'm striving for will make up for the extra download time.
- Adobe© AIR® for Designers (PowerPoint, 25MB)
- Adobe© AIR® for Designers (PDF, 8MB)

Newsletter #16 Sent
Newsletter #16 just went out today after a long delay. It's a bigger one but there's lots of good stuff in there. You can read it online at http://www.dmcinsights.com/newsletter.php if you're not subscribed to receive it via email.(October 23, 2008)
Ruby: Visual QuickStart Guide Complete!
I'm very happy to announce that I've completed my Ruby: Visual QuickStart Guide. The book should be available in about three weeks or so (around early November 2008). The book turned out well, I think, and it should hopefully be a nice addition to the relatively small catalog of Ruby books that are available. In particular, I think that the Ruby on Rails chapter is really nice. I was able to develop a real-world example that demonstrates many aspects of the Rails framework. It also covers Rails 2.1, which has some significant changes from the 1.x version of Rails. More news about this book to come in future newsletters and on this site!(October 7, 2008)
Newsletter #15 Released
Newsletter #15 went out in early August but I've been remiss in posting this update about it. It's relatively short, with most of the discussion on the business side of creating your own business. You can read it online at http://dmcinsights.com/newsletter.php. The next newsletter should go out in a few days.(September 2, 2008)
